Rick Hautala RIP

rickI’ve been seriously sick for the last week or two, pretty much avoiding the internet and trying to rest up.  I heard the news that Dave Silva and James Herbert had passed away, but since I didn’t know either gentleman personally it seemed like a distant thing to me.  Something viewed through the haze of antibiotics and cough medicine.

But life has a way of knocking us out of our comfort zones (or sick bed, as it were) and that’s what happened this afternoon when I heard the news that Rick Hautala passed away.  I didn’t know Dave or James, but I knew Rick.  I think we first met back at Necon in 2001 and I’ve always admired his talent and tenacity as a writer.  He was one of those authors I cut my teeth on, back when I first discovered horror fiction, and I always enjoyed the times when we had a chance to sit down and talk shop. I think the last time we did so was at Anthocon in New Hampshire this past fall.  Too few and too far between, as always.  Rick was just an all-around good guy and he will definitely be missed.

My prayers go out to his wife, Holly.

Godspeed, Rick.
