Mentoring

What is Story Coach Mentoring?

In short, a full-year of one on one mentoring for writers.

Every spring I work as a story coach and writing mentor with four to six writers interested in taking their work as novelists to the next level. With the 2017 class all but finished with mentorships, I’m looking for new students to take their places.

During this year long mentorship, we’ll dive deep into a project of your choice and work together to bring it to completion through a series of twenty-six coaching sessions, meeting every two weeks via telephone or video-conferencing session. We’ll create a written, personalized plan at the start for us to follow, so you’ll always know what to do next, and we’ll identify and then focus in on those critical areas that are causing you the most difficulty.

What Do You Get?

  • One on one coaching from a New York Times bestselling writer (me!) on your personal writing project for an entire year
  • The benefit of my seventeen years of publishing experience gained through writing (and selling) forty-five novels for six major publishers in the U.S. and overseas
  • An in-depth understanding of story structure and why it is critical to the success of your novel
  • A system for planning your novel – a story roadmap, if you will – that will not only make your story stronger but will also help you complete your manuscript faster
  • An understanding of character arcs and how to use them to emotionally tie your reader to the story you are telling
  • Developmental editing on everything from the creation of your premise to the completed manuscript
  • Line editing on the completed manuscript
  • Content editing on the completed manuscript
  • A plan for either submitting the work to a traditional publisher/agent or for self-publishing the manuscript yourself
  • If submitting to agents/publishers, help with putting together your proposal package, including the query letter, synopsis, and sample chapters
  • If self-publishing, help with understanding proper formatting, uploading the work to the various vendors, categories, keywords, and current launch strategies

How Do You Get It?
